A couple days ago, we decided we wanted to go on a backpacking trip. So we went to the store and got a bunch of food, bribed Aubree to come with us, and loaded up our backpacks.
After about 45 minutes in the car and another 10 minutes up the mountain, we finally got to the parking area and got our backpacks on.
Luckily, the hike to the lake we were going to was only an .8 mile hike. It didn’t seem long at first. But try doing it with a 15 pound bag on your back… trust me, it doesn’t feel like .8 miles.
I don’t look that tired there, but that was just the beginning!
Curtis ended up with the heaviest backpack that put all the weight on his shoulders, so he got extra-tired and his face turned red.
After the hike, we got there and set our backpacks down and looked for a place to unpack. It was pretty full, with kids and dogs playing in the water, but we found a small little place by the water and unpacked. Curtis and I got in the water (in the shallow part, it only went up to our knees) and caught a ton of salamanders! There was a ton! We even made a little circle of rocks and put them in there so they wouldn’t get out.

So after that, we just hung out. Then we ate dinner, which was little bags of dried food that you add water to. You buy them at G.I. Joes and we all got to pick out our own.
After dinner, Aubree and Curtis had a little game. There was a bunch of logs going across the water to get to the other side, so the game was, Aubree tried to shoot Curtis with the airsoft gun while he ran across. She only got him twice though.
After that, it was getting kind of dark. My dad, Sandi, and Curtis headed across the water and sat on a big rock while Curtis finished, and Aubree and I stayed in the tent and read for a little while and then went over to join them.
After that, and no luck getting any fish, we all went back and got ready for bed. After about 45 minutes of trying to get to sleep on the ground, and almost getting there, of course there was a distraction. Across the water where we were fishing guys started lighting off FIREWORKS! They threw water proof firecrackers in the water, and even lit off a couple ones that blew up in the air! After about 30 minutes, they stopped, thank heaven. But then after about an hour when we were almost asleep… of course… they started again! They lit off more loud ones that exploded in the air! After about 30 more minutes, my dad finally gave in and yelled for them to stop, and they did. Whew.
At 4 in the morning, (I STILL hadn’t got to sleep!) some lightening and thunder started. Then the wind started like CRAZY! It was going so fast! It was scary! My dad got out of his tent and said we might have to put on our rain ponchos and get away from the water, because lightening strikes near water. But the lightening wasn’t very close, so Sandi and Dad came into our tent and we all fall asleep, even me. I was so scared though! The lightening and thunder and wind was crazy! The flashes of lightening were so bright, the wind blew our tent like crazy and was very loud, and the thunder was even louder. Oddly I fell asleep through that, but not when it was quiet. Probably because I was cuddled with my family in the 3 man tent.
Morning finally came and we quickly packed up and headed back.
The hike back was way easier because it was mostly downhill. So we got back to the car in one piece, or 5 should I say, and left.
Overall, a very fun trip.
